BETTER SOLUTION
An impartial examination of alleged disruptive behavior by experienced professionals is critical. An external review by qualified experts assures that a fair and thorough investigation will be conducted – examining the forces at all levels that provoked the incident. This considered approach assures a more informed decision regarding responsibility, leads to more effective remediation, and reduces the likelihood of future behaviors of concern. It also protects institutions and individuals from bias and, almost equally problematic, the perception of bias. Hence, the institution is better protected from the legal and administrative headaches that can develop in these sensitive cases.

Dr. Frank Wolkenberg is a psychologist with significant experience in the evaluation of disruptive and impaired professionals. His expertise is in the assessment of behaviors, from the level of the brain and personality to the social and structural forces that shape behavior. He also prescribes and provides treatment, as appropriate. Over the past five years, he has assessed and treated healthcare professionals for a variety of institutions including the Physicians Health Program (PHP), and Physicians Rehabilitation Programs, the Maryland Board of Physicians, Johns Hopkins Hospital Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FASAP), and the University of Maryland Employee Assistance Program (EAP). He was also co-leader of the first coaching group for physicians labeled as disruptive for the PHP.
Wolkenberg Consulting LLC offers a full factual review. This process includes interviewing the principals in the case, obtaining and evaluating collateral information, and providing psychological and neuropsychological evaluations as needed. The skills of medical and medico-legal experts is offered if required. Following a thorough and careful investigation, an evidence-based opinion will be provided along with clear recommendations and a rationale for addressing them on both an individual and, if needed, on a structural/institutional level.
By taking advantage of this external process, the rationale for actions is clear, and the perception of bias is minimized. This approach reduces the risk of an action being perceived as unfair, and the unfortunate exposure that accompanies it. In cases where the accusation may be unfounded, an impartial review reduces the perception of undue influence, decreases the effect on morale that would ensue, and protects the hospital from losing well-qualified professionals. If it seems that there is an institutional issue, the opportunity exists to address it. In short, everyone benefits.
